Travel & Local Information

Stellenbosch is the hub of the Cape Winelands. Nestled among rolling vineyards set against dramatic mountains, it is home to Stellenbosch University, and features numerous excellent restaurants, microbreweries, and wine bars.

Stellenbosch is a 40-minute drive from Cape Town International Airport, which is well connected globally.  A car is not needed within Stellenbosch as it is a small walkable town, but is recommended if one wants to explore the surrounding region since public transport is scarce.  Taxis and Uber are readily available.

STIAS is a pleasant 15-20 minute walk east from town centre, situated in a leafy suburban area close to Stellenbosch University.  The workshop will be held in STIAS room 1.

Accommodations are plentiful in town, with many comfortable options under ZAR 1000/night, and fancier places under 2000/night.  Participants should arrange their own accommodations as needed.

Be aware that load shedding (i.e. periods of no electricity) is common in South Africa.  Some accommodations mitigate this by using generators or battery backup. Late summer temperatures typically reach 27 C (80 F) highs and 16 C (60 F) lows, so heating is unlikely to be needed. A/C is not widespread.

Stellenbosch is a relatively safe town but vigilance is always recommended.
